Has ‘conscience’ become an empty term, turned numb by the surge of insane news? Should this conscience lead towards actions which break the law? Does it suffer from internal flaws, so often being simply overruled? All too easy people hide behind feeble excuses, therefore not to be held fully responsible. After a long period of maturation, or rather, putrefaction, the main character of Don’t show, don’t tell Walter, finally turns to harsh actions.
What is the meaning of an incendiary letter without a real fire anyway? Doing both Walter hopes to focus the massmedia on what is, in practice, sacrosanct. Now the hunting season on Robert Keyser, a big porno- and repeatedly alleged childpornproducer is declared open. Childpornography and childabuse are like Siamese twins: truly inseparable. And both seem inextricably linked to the common corruption, filth and foolishness of these modern times.
Other characters in Don’t show, don’t tell are Savanah, Robert’s third wife and co-owner of the company merry-go-round, Putter, nicknamed ‘Broad’, an extremely frustrated vice officer, Liisa, former anatomist-pathologist and Broad´s recently added vice partner, Pieter, nicknamed the Nose, hacker/journalist and sort of friend of Walter, Guido, Walter’s best mate, and Walter’s ex-girlfriend, Wendy, a love gone wrong not yet overcome.
Don’t show, don’t tell describes the events of five days to end on the morning the court case against the Belgian Marc Dutroux finally begins. The 37 chapters describe in turns the life of Walter and one of the other characters. This novel addresses issues such as nurture versus nature, vice and media, and to-le-rance versus enough-is-enough! A number of prominent literary works are succinctly quoted: the past roughly fifty years could be recalibrated based upon these books.
All actions and people in Don’t show, don’t tell bear no resemblance with reality.
